MPs vow to make 'Britain the best place in the world to be a veteran'

Businesses were urged to offer more jobs to former soldiers as ministers vowed to make Britain the best place in the world to be a veteran.

Nearly 11,000 firms have signed up to the Armed Forces Covenant that promises ex-service personnel are not put at a disadvantage when they return to civilian life.

The government wants more companies to sign up so they can give opportunities to “world-class” veterans.

Disabilities Minister Mims Davies highlighted the case of military veteran Nik Eley, who was helped back into work after losing his leg.

She said: “Nik is an inspiration to all those members of the armed forces community who have left service and are ready to take the next step in their careers.

“The British Armed Forces are the best in the world and the skills its members have gained should be harnessed by every business.

“I’m calling on employers who haven’t already done so, to sign-up to the Armed Forces Covenant and provide opportunities for our world-class veterans.”

Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) and armed forces champions, who often have a background in military service, are based across the country to help veterans and their families back into work.

But the government said while it can help support veterans, businesses must offer them the jobs they need to thrive.

Mark Simmons, senior vice president of human resources at logistics firm GXO, said his company had benefited from employing veterans.

He said: “We are proud supporters of our armed forces and are committed to employing and developing those from the community.

“Signing the Covenant makes business sense, and we highly recommend other companies do the same.

“The unique skills and expertise our colleagues from the armed forces have gained while serving bring huge value to our business and they absolutely deserve our support.”

The Armed Forces Covenant is a promise by the Government, employers, veterans’ charities and all its signatories to support those who have been or are currently in the forces and their families. By signing up to the Covenant, businesses pledge to support the community by making job roles available to its members that are tailored to their needs and aiding their progression once they are in their role.

Veterans Minister Johnny Mercer said: “Sustainable, valuable employment gives veterans the best chance of success at building and sustaining a high quality of life after service.

“I would encourage all businesses to hire veterans, it is not simply charity or corporate social responsibility – it gives you the advantage and is one of the best business decisions you can make.”
