Most reliable used cars ranked – with four of the best models coming from one company

The used car cover provider Warrantywise has shared a list of the most reliable models on the used car market.

With used cars beginning to rise during February 2024, many motorists are making sure that their the next vehicle they buy is unlikely to spend precious time and money in a garage.

Lawrence Whittaker, CEO of Warrantywise, noted that, no matter the car, it could be worth investing in an extended warranty.

He explained: “At Warrantywise, we are dedicated to providing our consumers with valuable insights about their vehicles. We recognise the importance of making wise choices, particularly in light of the rising cost of repairs, and also that even the most reliable car is vulnerable to faults.

“Whether you buy a Toyota Yaris or a Honda CR-V, protecting your car with an extended warranty is one of the most reliable ways to confidently drive a used car without fear of big breakdown bills.”

Using data recorded between 2020 and 2023, Warrantywise noted that the most reliable used car in the UK is the Toyota Yaris, which received a score of 89 out of 100.

A mainstay in the Toyota range since its launch in 1999, the latest fourth generation Yaris has plenty of style and an efficient 1.5-litre hybrid engine.

According to the company, the typical Yaris repair cost its owner £604.50, suggesting that the popularity of the little hatchback means many mechanics are knowledgeable on how to fix issues.

Overall, Warrantywise’s study found that Japanese-built cars are still some of the most reliable sold in the UK, with four Toyota models featuring in the top ten list.

The Suzuki Swift, Mazda2 and Honda CR-V were also included on the list, with all models having a reliability score of more than 83 percent.

Nevertheless, some of the UK’s most reliable cars were made elsewhere, including Kia’s Cee’d and Rio from South Korea and the French Peugeot 108.
