A seasoned former doggy day care and kennel worker has given her expert opinion on the top dog breeds to consider for those thinking of introducing a canine companion into their homes.

We Brits adore our dogs, yet picking the perfect pet is an essential and intricate task. While some breeds provide faithful companionship, others might challenge your domestic harmony, so it’s vital to select a breed that fits your lifestyle and home setting.

Fortunately, there’s guidance available from a 22-year-old American who spent years working with dogs daily.

The social media influencer, known as @junk_mom on TikTok where she’s amassed an impressive 75,700 followers, has received countless queries about her preferred breeds to own.

She advises those on the hunt for the ideal pooch to visit shelters and check out the distinct personalities during visits to ensure a good fit.

Dachshund

Nevertheless, she highlights that there are 10 breeds that shine above others as exemplary pets. Famed as the sausage dog, the Dachshund may be just the ticket for anyone seeking a small-sized pet.

Renowned for their intelligence, loyalty, and playful nature, the ex-kennel operator characterised the breed as “so wiggly, so silly, cutest puppies, relatively quiet for a small breed, very sweet and loyal”.

Vizsla

The vizsla, a versatile red-coated hunting dog, can make a good family pet, but they are typically better suited to families with older children due to their high energy levels. These dogs have excellent stamina and are fantastic athletes, making them ideal for an active household.

@junk_mom commented: “Love to snuggle, great at trick training, gorgeous when bred right.”

Golden retriever

The golden retriever is another breed highly recommended by the former kennel worker. “Never met a mean one, adorable puppies, easy to train,” she said.

This breed is a classic family dog. They are active with high energy levels, yet also calm and intelligent. Plus, they are easy to train for first-time dog owners, according to PDSA.

Boxer

The ex-kennel worker praises Boxer dogs for their tons of personality and loyalty.

She admits they “make me laugh” and “love hugs”. Their patience and protective nature have earned them a reputation as being great with children and effective guard dogs.

They are also playful and require a lot of exercise.

Wheaten terriers

Wheaten terriers, according to @junk_mom, have puppy eyes, are great with kids, and are a perfect size.

They are known for being fantastic family dogs and a great breed to have around children. They are gentle and love being around other dogs.

Rottweiler

With proper training and socialisation, Rottweiler dogs can be a good family dog. They are generally considered better for older children to their larger size and protective nature.

The ex dog carer said she thinks these dogs are big lovers and “each one has a unique personality”.

Cocker spaniel

She added that cocker spaniel’s are suitable for someone looking for a low maintenance dog who loves spending their time cuddling and napping. “Beautiful when groomed right, usually live long lives,” she added.

Mastiff

This huge lap dog is “fiercely loyal to owners” said the former kennel worker. “I love playing with a squishy face,” she added. These dogs are known for being loyal, protective and gentle. They are great family companions and guard dogs.

Basset hound

The content creator describes these dogs as “couch potatoes” and “great singers”. She also said they are silly and hilarious. The dog with long ears typically survive between 10 and 12 years and is a great companion due to its gentle and laid-back nature.

Lhasa Apso

“Looks like old men, act like old men, fun to carry around like a baby,” @junk_mom. These dogs are extremely loyal, playful and fun-loving. They are also great watchdogs, and are low maintenance.
