Moss ‘disappears from lawn’ fast with gardener’s ‘brilliant’ suggestion – no raking needed

Moss can creep in and take over during the winter months and weed growth starts to increase in spring.

Moss loves cool, moist growing conditions and the shelter and support of surrounding lawn.

It also loves decaying organic plant material, such as the “thatch” which gathers on the surface of the soil beneath the grass.

This consists of dead grass leaves and debris which builds up during the season. So how can you go about getting rid of moss to get your lawn back in shape for summer?

Eager to find a lawn treatment that works to remove moss, one woman took to the Gardening UK Facebook page for recommendations.

Rachel Hadley said: “Lawn treatment for moss. Any recommendations for a moss killer with no need to rake afterwards?

“In previous years have used the Vitax moss remover, but are there any others out there?”

Taking to the comments section, group members suggested a range of products, but only involved no raking.

Halina Waniec wrote: “Richard Jacksons do one that is brilliant. quickly after I used it the moss disappeared from my lawn.

Janet Borril added: “I used Richard Jackson moss killer. It is great and does the job with no need to rake.”

According to gardening expert Richard Jackson, his moss remover is a natural, plant-based lawn food that gently feeds the lawn for up to 12 weeks, while naturally removing any unsightly moss.

Explaining how his treatment differs from others on the market, Richard said: “Most gardeners use chemical-based moss killers to get rid of moss on their lawns, but these turn the dying moss black (so it looks horrible), and they can also scorch the lawn and stain the patio.

“Then you have to rake out the dying moss, which is often hard, back-breaking work. My new natural Moss Remover is a much better alternative.

“As the grass grows, the potash in the feed ‘over feeds’ the moss, which then gradually (after 20 days or so) dies back naturally, you’ll see it slowly turning brown

“The granules also contain naturally occurring ‘friendly’ bacteria that then start to ‘eat’ the dying moss which gradually disappears as your grass grows. There’s no need to rake out the dying moss, nature does the work for you.”

A 5kg bag of Richard Jackson Moss Remover retails for £29.99 on Amazon or can be purchased on eBay for £34.99.

This treatment can be used from now until the end of September. The moss-eating bacteria in Moss Remover needs a soil temperature of 10C or above to “work effectively”.

The bacteria also need moist soil and may not be effective during hot weather/heatwaves or prolonged periods of dry weather – in these circumstances, it is important to keep the soil moist.

If the lawn contains a lot of moss, it can take a while for the grass to fill the patches.

One 5kg bag of the Moss Remover can treat up to 100sqm of lawn (applying 50g per sqm). If the lawn has a lot of moss, apply 100g per sqm, so it will treat 50sqm in total.
