Moment Nottingham killer is caught by police after knife rampage left three dead

The moment killer Valdo Calocane was captured by police after he’d butchered two young students and another man was caught on camera. Police have released the images of the paranoid schizophrenic after his frenzied rampage that saw him kill three and try to kill three more people.

Shocking images show Calocane calmly walking the streets with his hands in his pockets, riding on a tram and crossing the road.

Sentencing him at Nottingham Crown Court on Thursday, judge Mr Justice Turner said the killer would be detained in a high-security hospital “very probably for the rest of your life”, before sentencing him to a hospital order.

He said: “You committed a series of atrocities in this city which ended the lives of three people in this city. Your sickening crimes both shocked the nation and wrecked the lives of your surviving victims and the families of them all.”

He said the “harrowing” details of the attacks have been “fully recounted and explored” in court over the past couple of days.

More pictures shared by the Nottingham force show two officers detaining Calocane as he is dragged between them after being Tasered.

Tragic CCTV images of the young victims – Grace O’Malley Kumar and Barnaby Webber, both aged 19 – have also been shared as they walked together following a night out.

Calocane also butchered Ian Coates, 65, and attempted to kill three other people by mowing them down in a van he stole from the school caretaker on June 13 last year.

Police have admitted they “should have done more” to arrest a paranoid schizophrenic before the knife-wielding rampage as they failed to execute an outstanding arrest warrant.

Assistant Chief Constable Rob Griffin said: “We should have done more to arrest him.”

He said it was unlikely Calocane would have been jailed but conceded “it might have triggered a route back into mental health services”.

Defence barrister Peter Joyce KC told a sentencing hearing at Nottingham Crown Court: “He should not have been on the streets of Nottingham but the fact he was is not his fault.”

The horrifying attacks took place when Calocane knifed Miss O’Malley Kumar and Mr Webber, who were studying medicine and history at the University of Nottingham respectively, were on Ilkeston Road at around 4am on June 13.

Their bodies were found in the street just 300 yards from their halls of residence. Miss O’Malley Kumar put herself between the attacker and her friend in a desperate attempt to save him.

Mr Coates was then found dead in Magdala Road around an hour later having also been repeatedly stabbed.

The killer then used Mr Coates’ van to drive at three pedestrians – Wayne Birkett, Marcin Gawronski and Sharon Miller – in Milton Street and South Sherwood Street. They all survived the attack.

This week Calocane pleaded guilty to manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility and attempted murder, with all his pleas accepted by prosecutors.

It means he avoided standing trial for murder.

Before a judge at Nottingham Crown Court sat to sentence Calocane, Lee Coates, one of the sons of victim Mr Coates, was applauded after standing up in courtroom one to make an impromptu address.

Speaking towards the families of Barnaby and Grace, Mr Coates said: “No matter what the outcome is our family are here for you from now until whenever. I am so sorry that we had had to go through this and this is how we have met.

“If I don’t manage to stay the whole day because I can’t keep my mouth shut, I apologise. But we are in the same boat.”

Relatives of those killed and injured in the attacks, sitting in the public gallery, responded by applauding Mr Coates’ remarks.
