Moment hero police officer sliced open with 'machete-style' blade in bloodbath arrest

A police officer in south London required hospital treatment following a hand injury sustained during an arrest. Although the Met Police told Express.co.uk that it was “unknown” exactly how the wound was sustained, Chief Inspector Mark Kent said that there is “no place for knives on our streets” and that the assailant was armed.

In a shocking video clip posted on X, a man can be seen being detained by two officers. Surrounding the prone man, there are clearly visible droplets of blood on the pavement.

The camera pans to an officer, whose face is never in shot, and a blood hand injury is visible. Later in the footage another police car can be seen racing onto the pavement.

Chief Inspector Mark Kent, of the Met’s Central South Command, said: “This incident highlights the danger that our officers face every day in their efforts to keep the public safe.

“There is no place for knives on our streets. This is a city where millions of people live, work and raise their families. There is no need, and no place, for weapons such as this.

“The officer detained an armed suspect placing the safety of those at the scene ahead of his own and I commend him for his brave actions.

“Nobody should have to go to work wondering if they will finish their shift without being injured. Whilst the officer did require hospital treatment, I am pleased to be able to say that, on this occasion, he is expected to make a full recovery.”

The incident took place after 12pm on Monday, 8 April, after officers were called to reports of a disturbance on Walworth Road, in Camberwell.

Following the injury to the officer, a 22-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm. He remains in custody.

There were no other reported injuries.
