Mom-to-be left confused after mother-in-law makes huge mistake at gender reveal party

A grandmother-to-be faced criticism after mistakenly ruining a gender reveal by misunderstanding the concept.

For many expecting parents, reaching the 18 to 21-week mark in their pregnancy is eagerly anticipated as it often marks the opportunity to learn the gender of their baby.

In addition to traditional baby showers, gender reveal parties have become increasingly popular as a fun way to announce whether they are expecting a boy or girl.

An unnamed 31-year-old woman shared on Reddit her experience attending a gender reveal party organised by her co-workers.

Initially excited about the idea, she left the event in tears of joy upon learning the gender of her baby.

However, her happiness turned to disbelief when it was later discovered that the reveal was entirely wrong.

Humorously, her mother, tasked with learning the gender first for the reveal, made an erroneous guess based on what she thought she saw on the ultrasound scan – mistaking it for a penis.

That’s how the wrong coloured confetti ended up being placed inside the balloon, leading to an unexpected outcome at the party.

She said: “The ultrasound tech gave me the envelope and we went on our way. My co-worker couldn’t wait to see the envelope so I walked away and my mother told her over the phone.”

The enthusiastic grandmother inadvertently relayed the incorrect gender information to her daughter’s colleague.

The next day, the expectant mother arrived at work to find her colleagues eagerly waiting in a conference room, armed with balloons ready to pop and unveil the baby’s gender.

She added: “They blindfolded me and walked me into the group room. I couldn’t see a thing and was so excited. When they asked me to take off my blindfold I immediately looked up to see a bag of balloons. They screamed ‘don’t look up’ and then they told me to pop the balloon.

“They gave me no direction and told me to pop the wrong balloon and no confetti came out. They then popped the real one for me and it was blue. I’m having a boy!”

She continued: “I was so excited and absolutely grateful they did this for me that I started happy crying and let me tell you, I’ve never cried like that it was definitely an experience I’ll remember forever.”

After the party, the expectant mother retreated to her car, where she had kept the envelope containing the doctor’s confirmation of the baby’s gender. Upon checking it, she was bewildered to discover that it indicated she was expecting a baby girl.

She wrote: “My mother thought she saw a penis. And that was my first and last gender reveal of my life.” Despite the blunder the mum-to-be seemed to maintain a positive attitude, admitting: “It was eventful to say the least but I don’t regret it.”
