Modi inaugurates Ayodhya temple on the site of razed mosque

India’s prime minister Narendra Modi prays at a Hindu temple built on the site of the razed Ayodhya mosque.

Mr Modi, left, who inaugurated the temple, heralded “a new era” for his country.

But it is controversial as the tearing down of the 16th-century mosque by Hindu mobs in 1992 sparked riots in which nearly 2,000 died.

Critics say Modi’s ruling party is using it for political gain ahead of elections.
