Millions at risk of custodial sentences, unlimited fines and driving bans tonight

Millions of drivers are at risk of being slapped with serious punishments tonight with drink driving rules expected to be broken.

New analysis from KwikFit has revealed that a staggering 3.8 million designated drivers will likely have too much to drink on New Year’s Eve.

This not only raises a major safety risk but could see motorists issued severe sanctions if they are caught.

According to the breakdown group, men are almost twice as likely as women to have been the unreliable designated driver.

Although many will decide to find alternative ways of getting home, some are likely to break the rules and risk a short journey anyway.

This can lead to devastating consequences with motorists at risk of being slapped with tough custodial sentences for not being responsible.

GOV.UK warns simply being in charge of a vehicle while above the legal limit can result in three months imprisonment. Meanwhile, motorists may also get a staggering £2,500 fine and a possible driving ban.

Causing death by careless driving when under the influence of drink may lead to lifetime imprisonment and at least a five-year ban.

Meanwhile, simply refusing to provide a specimen of breath, blood or urine for analysis can see motorists issued a six-month sentence and a one-year ban.

Roger Griggs, communications director at Kwik Fit says: “Drinking and driving should never mix, and it’s vital people can rely on their designated driver to get them home safely, especially if public transport is limited and taxis are in huge demand.

“However a designated New Year’s Eve driver is chosen, there’s no excuse for them to let their group down by then drinking and not being able to drive.

“We urge all those who are going out this New Year to decide who is driving well before the night, agree on what, if anything, the driver should get in return, and then stick to it. But whatever the agreement, no one should be getting behind the wheel after drinking.”

According to KwikFit, around 32 percent of designated drivers are usually those who don’t drink alcohol. However, around 14 percent of respondents said one person drove as they were the only person with a valid licence.

A total of 12 percent usually alternate from one year to the next, while nine percent say the New Year’s Eve driver doesn’t drive on another “big night out”.

Amazingly, six percent admit to playing a game to decide driving duties, with the loser having to get behind the wheel. One in 20 have also made the vital decision on the simple toss of a coin.
