The Met Office has issued a fresh weather warning forecasting snow and ice for 14 hours.
The warning – which was updated at 10pm – says there could be between 1cm and 3cm for parts of northern Scotland. It will remain in force until midday tomorrow.
In the Scottish Highlands there could be around 8cm of snow along with icy conditions on the roads. The Met Office says it is likely there will be travel disruptions due to the adverse weather.
Some roads and railways are also set to be hit by the snow, with the Met Office saying journey times could be longer. There could also be potentially dangerous conditions on some roads.
The warning was extended just before 10pm to include more eastern and southern parts of Scotland. It currently includes Central, Tayside and Fife; Grampian; Highlands & Eilean Siar; Orkney and Shetland; South West Scotland, Lothian Borders; and Strathclyde.
The Met Office forecast says: ” Snow showers, mainly affecting northern Scotland on Tuesday evening, will extend further south to reach some other parts of Central Scotland overnight into Wednesday morning. Accumulations of 1-3cm are likely quite widely across the warning area, with perhaps another 5-8cm over the Northwest Highlands.
“Icy surfaces will be an additional hazard, following the recent wet weather. What should I do? Snowy, wintry weather can cause delays and make driving conditions dangerous. Keep yourself and others safe by planning your route, giving yourself extra time for your journey.
“Check for road closures or delays to public transport and amend plans if necessary. If driving, make sure you have some essentials in your car in the event of any delays (e.g., warm clothing, food, water, a blanket, a torch, ice scraper/de-icer, a warning triangle, high visibility vest and an in-car phone charger).
“Be prepared for weather warnings to change quickly: when a weather warning is issued, the Met Office recommends staying up to date with the weather forecast in your area”
A second weather warning is in place later in the week that forecasts snow in parts of central and northern England – including Manchester, Newcastle, Liverpool and Lancashire. Another is in place for Northern Ireland predicting snow.
The 24-hour warnings will run from 6am Thursday to 6am Friday. The Met Office says a period of snow “could bring some disruption”.
