Meghan Markle's Suits success sparks demand for legal drama copycats, says Netflix boss

Suits’ rise in popularity on Netflix may be the catalyst for a number of legal shows on the streamer, thanks to the Meghan Markle effect.

The hit show ran for nine seasons, coming to an end in 2019, but new viewers watched it with fresh eyes when it dropped on Netflix earlier this year.

Suits, which is set at a New York law firm, has been one of the most watched shows on the streamer in 2023, despite subscribers only having old episodes to watch.

According to The Times, analysts have said Markle may have been a significant factor in Suits’ high viewing figures on Netflix with many curious to see her in the show.

The USA Network show made Markle an international star before her life as a Duchess of Sussex, portraying Rachel Zane.

It is now believed that because of this overwhelming success with Suits, that there will be plenty more legal dramas to come on Netflix trying to replicate its popularity.

Co-CEO of Netflix Ted Sarandos told investors: “I would argue next year you’ll probably see a bunch of lawyer shows.”

He then went on to discuss how it was a smart move to get access to older films and television shows rather than always creating new ones.

“Sony is making a movie of Cobra Kai”, he said. “Why are they doing that? Because Cobra Kai was a monster on Netflix.”

Markle also addressed the renewed love of Suits with Variety last month, describing it as “wild”.

She also claimed that she had “no idea” why the show which started way back in 2011 had once again attracted attention.

Markle said: “It was great to work on, such a great cast and crew.

“We had a really fun time. I was on it for seven seasons so quite a bit.

“But it’s hard to find a show you can binge-watch that many episodes of these days so that could have something to do with it. But good shows are everlasting.”

Alongside Markle, the original cast starred the likes of Sarah Rafferty, Patrick J Adams and Gabriel Macht.

Following its revival, producers are now working on a Suits spin-off which will be written by its original creator Aaron Korsh.

This time around, it will be set in Los Angeles, although no other details have been confirmed as of yet.

Suits is available to watch on NetfliX.
