Meghan Markle’s ‘rebranding’ questioned by Caprice Bourret as expert warns of risky move

Caprice Bourret has questioned how Prince Harry and Meghan Markle could move forward from the publicised drama with his family after making various bombshells about them in recent years. The couple are said to be working on solo projects following the collapse of their Spotify deal last year, a move that was recently branded “a big risk” by royal expert Kinsey Schofield.

Speaking exclusively to Express.co.uk, Caprice, 52, who this week launched her brand new collection Caprice With Love in collaboration with Peacocks, questioned how a rebrand for the pair was possible after their drama. After quitting their senior royal duties in 2020, the married couple moved to America to start a new life with their two children Archie, four, and Lilibet, two.

Since then they have, together and respectively, spoken out about their experience in the royal family in interviews, their own Netflix documentary and in Harry’s autobiography Spare.

Amongst many bombshells, Meghan told Oprah Winfrey in 2021 that she was declined help from the institution after expressing concerns about her mental health. She and Harry also claimed that an unnamed member of the family had concerns about the colour of their son Archie’s skin before he was born.

Away from royal life, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex went on to sign a reported $20 million exclusive deal with Spotify, which included Meghan fronting a podcast titled Archetypes. In July 2023 however, it was announced they had made a “mutual decision” to part ways with the streaming giant.

Following their departure, reports suggested they were moving on from royal life and “rebranding” themselves.

Addressing the speculation, Caprice said: “Anything that they do, they’re just having a hard time getting it off the ground.

“But they have to stop with [bashing] the royal family.” Instead, the model urged the pair to concentrate on their own lives and questioned how they could move forward.

“I don’t know how they’re trying to rebrand her, well that’s what they say. You’re only as good as your last project,” she added.

“The entertainment world is ruthless and it’s vain. I fricking love it you just need to learn how to play the game.

Following the end of their Spotify deal, the couple are said to be working on different projects respectively.

Harry for example recently travelled to Japan and Singapore without his wife to promote the Invictus Games ahead of his Heart of Invictus Netflix release. There are also reports that Meghan is penning her own book, which has reportedly been in the pipeline for “a very long time”, according to royal commentator Angela Levin.

According to Nick Ede, a brand and culture expert and Meghan’s former pal, the mother-of-two also appears to be changing her image and is “not afraid to poke fun at herself”.

Ede told the Mail Online: “This fun side to Meghan is a clever way for the brand Clevr to get a lot of social media traction and engagement by using their famous investor.

“It’s also a way of showing Meghan in a new light that is both fun and frivolous.

“Does it work? I think that Meghan is now such a polarizing figure that comments on the social media post are negative and not celebratory which is a shame, as the post was meant to be a showing off the success and hard work of the business.”

Speaking to Fox News, royal expert Kinsey Schofield claimed there were “clear signs of professional separation” after talent management agency WME announced they were signing Meghan.

She added: “Then the ‘Heart of Invictus’ trailer was released, and we discovered that Prince Harry was the executive producer — without Meghan.”

Kinsey went on to say: “I certainly think that Meghan has counsel in her ear telling her that she is better off without Prince Harry and the royal drama — professionally — but Meghan was a working actor before Harry. She was not a celebrity or a household name. We loved and accepted Meghan because we have loved Prince Harry since he was a little boy.”

The royal expert also noted that people will “continue to sour toward her as she chases the spotlight,” unlike her spouse, who she believes seems committed more than ever to his charitable efforts that stems from his time as a working member of royals.

She added: “We are less likely to criticise him when he is putting all his effort into something positive that will help others. I think she takes a huge risk distancing herself from the individual that gave her the platform that she has today. As a former PR professional, I would not advise it.”
