Meghan Markle’s logo for her new brand, As Ever, may have sparked backlash due to its striking resemblance to a Spanish flag, but its design could carry a deeper meaning, according to reports.
The Duchess of Sussex uploaded a new video on her Instagram account this week, announcing that she has renamed her lifestyle brand from American Riviera Orchard to As Ever
The new website for the venture features a picture of the duchess and her three-year-old daughter, Princess Lilibet, photographed from a distance, walking hand-in-hand across a sunny lawn with palm trees in the background.
It also features a logo for the brand, which consists of a palm tree and two hummingbirds on each side.
But the logo quickly sparked backlash by fans after they spotted how similar it looked to the coat of arms of Porreres, a municipality in Majorca, which also features on its flag.
Porreres mayor Francisca Mora Veny is reportedly considering legal action and has called for the removal of As Ever’s logo.
But other reports suggested that Meghan’s controversial logo may have links to Prince Harry’s late grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II.
According to People, the hummingbirds could be a tribute to the late monarch.
In his memoir, Spare, the Duke of Sussex wrote about the significance between hummingbirds and his late grandmother.
He wrote, describing the time when one hummingbird managed to get into his house in Montecito, California, shortly after he and his wife Meghan Markle returned to the UK following Elizabeth’s funeral in 2022: “Soon after our return, a hummingbird got into the house.
“I had a devil of a time guiding it out, and the thought occurred that maybe we should start shutting the doors, despite those heavenly ocean breezes.
“Then a mate said ‘Could be a sign, you know? Some cultures see hummingbirds as spirits’, he said. Visitors, as it were.
“Aztecs thought them reincarnated warriors. Spanish explorers called them ‘resurrection birds’.”
In the Sussexes’s 2022 bombshell Netflix docuseries, Harry & Meghan, the duke was seen with his son, Prince Archie, watching hummingbirds in their garden.
Harry told Archie: “We won’t get a chance to be this close to hummingbirds ever again.”
The youngster quipped: “Why?” to which the duke replied: “Because they’re scared of humans. These guys, look at them!W
Meanwhile, Meghan’s palm tree in her logo could be an ode to her home in Santa Barbara, as palm trees are very common in the area.
During a 2022 interview to the Cut, Meghan claimed palm trees were one of the first things she and her husband noticed when viewing their future home.
She said: “One of the first things my husband saw when we walked around the house was those two palm trees.
“See how they’re connected at the bottom? He goes, ‘My love, it’s us.’ And now every day when Archie goes by us, he says, ‘Hi, Momma. Hi, Papa.'”
