Sunday has rolled around once again, and many of us will be planning get-togethers with family and friends for dinner. And if you’re on dessert duties, there’s one thing that always hits the spot – a good apple crumble.

The buttery, crumbly topping pairs so well with the tanginess of the apples hidden underneath. When served warm with custard or cream, you know it’s always going to be a crowd-pleaser. It’s not difficult to make either – in fact, according to the baking queen Mary Berry, you can whip up one of these puds with just six ingredients.

This easy recipe, which serves six people, is a classic for a reason. Warm and comforting, it’s perfect for an after-dinner treat on these cold and gloomy evenings.

The sweet, buttery topping makes it taste so indulgent, with the sharpness of the apples cutting through perfectly.

Fans have been left so impressed with this recipe that it boasts an average rating of 4.9 stars out of five on the Happy Foodie website. Raving about how good it was, one person said: “Everyone tucked in. Not a crumb left over. Delicious!”

Another wrote: “Turned out fantastic, my husband said it’s the best he’s ever tasted.”

Here’s how you can make it at home.

Method

Preheat the oven to 200°C/180°C Fan/Gas 6.

Place the apples in a large pan, add two tablespoons of water and the butter and cook over a gentle heat for about six minutes, stirring regularly until tender. Take off the heat, stir in the sugar and allow to cool.

Meanwhile, to make the crumble topping, measure the ingredients into a large bowl and rub together with your fingers until the mixture looks like breadcrumbs.

Spoon the cold apple into the pie dish and level the surface with a spatula. Sprinkle an even layer of crumble topping over the apple, then add a little extra demerara sugar.

Cook in the preheated oven for 20 minutes. Lower the temperature to 180°C/160°C Fan/Gas 4 and cook for another 20 minutes until golden and bubbling.

Serve hot with cream, custard, ice cream or crème fraîche.
