Manchester United legend Peter Schmeichel has hinted that Christian Eriksen may not have the stamina to continue in the Premier League.
The midfielder has found it difficult to secure a regular spot on the team this season, especially after Ruben Amorim took over as head coach in November, having only played eight times under the Portuguese manager.
Eriksen, who will celebrate his 33rd birthday on Friday, is out of contract at the end of the season and is likely to be let go. He signed with United on a free transfer in July 2022 after leaving Brentford.
Eriksen has only played in five of the 13 Premier League games overseen by Amorim since he replaced Erik ten Hag, starting twice. He has clocked up just ten minutes of league football so far in 2025.
As his United career seems to be winding down, Schmeichel thinks a move back to Ajax would make sense for Eriksen at this point in his career. He began his senior career with the Dutch club before transferring to Tottenham Hotspur in 2013.
“That would be a great step for him,” Schmeichel told Voetbal Primeur. “Of course, as we know, he is a midfielder. Nowadays in the Premier League you need players who can sprint up and down for 90 minutes.
“The way Ruben Amorim wants to play also doesn’t suit him, he wants to win the ball back quickly. At a very high pace. That’s not in his nature. Unfortunately, Eriksen no longer has that energy.
“He’s a great player. Some of the things he does on the field… He’s still so good on the ball and technically. I think Ajax would be a fantastic move for him.”
