A man died after falling from a waterfall at a popular UK holiday destination. The hiker fell 100ft from Kinder Scout, the highest point in the Dark Peak in the Peak District, on June 30.

Rescue teams, including a coastguard helicopter and a drone unit, rushed to the area but the man was pronounced dead at the scene. A total of 31 people from Kinder Mountain Rescue and Derbyshire Police were involved in the recovery effort. A stretcher was used to hoist the man’s body from the base of the waterfall.

The Kinder Mountain Rescue Team said in a statement on Facebook: “When the helicopter arrived, conditions proved to be too challenging to winch directly from the base of the Downfall.

“So the team performed a difficult stretcher carry to a lower location where he could be collected by the helicopter and flown to our vehicles.

“This was a challenging ten hour incident for all involved. We would like to thank the group of walkers who called in the incident for their assistance.

“The team would like to pass on our sincere condolences to the walker’s family.”

The Peak District welcomes over 13 million visitors every year. It is one of the most popular national parks in the UK and is known for its amazing natural landscapes.

The Kinder Downfall is the highest waterfall in the Peak District National Park. It is situated on Kinder Scout which is a popular spot for walkers and climbers.

An information website about the Peak District said: “It gets its name from the River Kinder, which runs down into the reservoir.”

It adds: “Nearby you also have the 2000ft peak of Kinder Scout, the highest point in the Peaks, as well as Mermaid’s Pool and Kinder Reservoir.”

Earlier this year, a young woman died after falling from a mountain peak in Snowdonia. Maria Eftimova, 28, was climbing with friends when she fell in February.
