Make your home 'warm up faster and retain heat' without turning the heating up

There are several ways you can keep the home warm without cranking up the heating.

A great tip from British Gas is to have readymade foil insulation placed behind radiators.

Instead of the radiator warming up the wall it is on, readymade foil insulation – better known as radiator reflector foil – reflects the heat into the room.

You can get Amazon’s choice radiator foil for £14.90, or you can get crafty and make your own.

British Gas said: “Cover a thin sheet of card with tinfoil and place it behind your radiators.

“It’ll reflect the heat back into your rooms, meaning they warm up faster and retain more heat.”

Whether you’re into DIY or not, purchasing pipe lagging would be a good long-term investment.

British Gas explained: “Pipe lagging (insulating hot water pipes with foam tubes) keeps the water inside your pipes hotter for longer and prevents pipes freezing. It also makes your heating and hot water much more efficient.”

This too can be bought on Amazon, with the best seller priced at £8.27; alternatively, any DIY store will also sell pipe lagging.

While these tips so far could cost you a little bit of money in the short term, in the long term, it will be beneficial for your wallet or purse.

By warming up the house with these simple measures, you can turn down the thermostat and your heating bill.

Another good investment is getting a window draught excluder and insulating tape.

British Gas elaborated: “Filling in the gaps around windows and doors can help you save on your heating bills. Fitting it is a breeze too, just make sure it sits snugly.”

One tip that doesn’t cost you anything at all is being strategic with your home curtains.

Before night falls, draw the curtains to help keep the heat inside of the home. There’s no point paying for heating when the majority of it seeps outside the window.
