Make James Martin’s ‘really easy’ four-ingredient classic pancakes in under 10 minutes

Pancake Day, or Shrove Tuesday, is the traditional feast day before the start of Lent on Ash Wednesday.

Traditionally during Lent, Christians would give up rich, tasty foods such as butter, eggs, sugar and some fat.

With so many recipes online, it can be hard to know which ones will get the best results but James Martin’s recipe has several five-star reviews.

The recipe notes said: “Try James Martin’s really easy classic pancake recipe with a wicked chocolate sauce.

“Once you’ve learned how to make pancakes you can experiment with the toppings.”

Ingredients:

For the pancakes:

85g self-raising flour

One free-range egg

300ml milk

Drizzle of oil

For the chocolate sauce:

55g caster sugar

Splash of hot water

30g cocoa powder

Method:

To make the pancake batter, simply whisk the flour, egg and milk into a bowl and set it aside.

Heat a little oil into a pancake pan, and once hot, ladle some of the mixture into the pan, swirling it around until it’s even.

Allow the pancake to fry for one to two minutes on each side or until golden before repeating with the rest of the batter.

To make the delicious chocolate sauce, James said to whisk the sugar, water and cocoa together in a small pan over a gentle heat.

Add some extra water into it depending on how thick you like the sauce to be on pancakes.

To serve, transfer the pancakes to a serving plate and drizzle the chocolate sauce over, adding some fruit like bananas for an extra touch.

Some icing sugar can also be sieved on top to make them extra tasty and aesthetically pleasing.

This recipe serves two people and can easily be doubled to make more pancakes.

They can also be made ahead of time but will taste best when served immediately after making.
