A charity shop that is found in many towns, villages and cities across Britain has announced the closure of 88 stores nationwide. Many charities have shops around the country, selling donated clothes, books and homewares to raise money for their respective causes. Charity shopping has been popular in the UK for decades, with people often finding bargains and enjoying shopping more sustainably. However, one popular charity shop chain is closing almost 90 stores by May 2026. It is one of a few charity shop chains that are set to close stores in the near future.
The announcement was made by Cancer Research, which will close shops from London to Scotland to Northern Ireland. The charity explained that it plans to cut its retail footprint in response to rising national insurance contributions, inflationary pressures, and changes in consumer behaviour. 88 shops have been earmarked for closure by May 2026. Meanwhile, a further 100 are planned to close by April 2027.
However, Cancer Research plans to open twelve new ‘superstores’ around the UK by 2028. These stores are usually four times bigger than High Street stores, typically found in retail parks rather than town centres.
The charity currently has around 46 superstores around the UK. “By focusing on a smaller, more efficient retail operation, we can enhance our funding for life-saving cancer research and better serve our customers, staff, and volunteers,” said Chief Executive Michelle Mitchell.
“We understand that this news may be difficult, and we have made these decisions with careful consideration. Our commitment to supporting everyone affected during this transition remains a top priority, and we will provide clear information and assistance throughout the process.”
