Madeleine McCann suspect 'taunts police' in first comments ahead of rape trial

Christian Brueckner, the prime suspect in the Madeleine McCann case, has reportedly taunted police in his first comments ahead of his upcoming trial in Germany, due to start today.

Brueckner is set to stand trial accused of multiple offences against women and children in Portugal, including three rapes and two indecent assaults.

In a statement to the MailOnline, Brueckner complained about the conditions in jail, stating: “I’m still not allowed to talk with anybody else than to my lawyer and to my punishers (guards).”

Mockingly addressing the charges against him, he added: “I hope (they) will find some answers to (their) questions soon.”

His lawyer, Friedrich Fulscher, spoke to the Mail Online, expressing his intention to seek a “full acquittal” in the upcoming trial.

Fulscher emphasised that the charges “have nothing to do with Madeleine McCann” and clarified that Brueckner has “not been charged with anything in relation to the McCann investigation”.

He also revealed that he had not been given access to the case files to review the evidence against his client.

Amid concerns about the security of the trial, authorities have implemented stringent measures. Armed police will be stationed both inside and outside the court for each of the 29 hearings, ensuring a high level of security.

Brueckner is expected to be transferred from his high-security prison in northern Germany for the duration of the trial. Access to the courtroom will be through a secure tunnel from a holding facility, accompanied by his legal team.

Court spokeswoman Lisa Rust confirmed the issuance of a ‘polizeianordnung’ – a police order – for Brueckner’s trial. As part of the security measures, individuals attending the trial, including lawyers, media, and members of the public, will be required to show formal identification to the police before entering the court.

The trial is anticipated to last until June, bringing renewed attention to the suspect and the serious charges he faces, despite the absence of charges directly related to Madeleine McCann’s disappearance in 2007.
