Two men have been arrested following the heist at the Louvre Museum in Paris.
One man had been trying to escape to Algeria when he was caught and arrested at Roissy-Charles-de-Gaulle airport at around 10pm by border police and handed over to officers, reports French media.
The second man was arrested shortly after in the Paris region. They are both from Seine-Saint-Denis, a northern suburb of Paris, according to French paper Le Parisien.
The two suspects have been placed in pre-trial detention as part of investigations into “organised theft” and “criminal conspiracy to commit a crime”.
They are suspected of being part of the group that used a cherry picker to reach a window in the Apollo Gallery.
The “highly organised criminals” broke into the Louvre in broad daylight just after 9.30am last Sunday, October 19, and escaped with priceless jewellery, including part of the French crown jewels.
