A Loose Women panellist has said that King Charles found one aspect of his marriage to Princess Diana particularly “difficult to cope with”.
Jane Moore, who met Diana multiple times as a royal correspondent, discussed the Prince’s challenging relationship dynamics during an episode of the Loose Women podcast.
The star described Diana as “moody” and “mercurial”, traits which she believes presented challenges for Charles considering their significant age difference.
Jane Moore, who appeared on I’m A Celebrity last year, made her comments alongside co-panellist Sunetra Sarker, where she mused on the potential role Diana might have played in the Royal Family if not for her tragic death 28 years ago.
Reflecting on Diana’s complex character, Jane said: “She could be quite mercurial. One minute she’d be quite chitty chitty chat chat with you, and then if there was something that happened that she didn’t like, she would be very frosty.”
The conversation provided insight into the nuances of the royal marriage between Diana and Charles, who was 12 years her senior, reports Cambridgeshire Live.
Moore also added: “She was quite moody, I suppose, and I think that was what Charles found very difficult to cope with because she was a lot younger than him.”
While the public remains fascinated by Charles’s first marriage to Diana, detailed extensively in Netflix’s The Crown, he has since found long-standing happiness with Queen Camilla.
Yet, as time progresses, more anecdotes surface about the highs and lows of Charles and Diana’s marriage, including steps Charles took before their nuptials when he was 32 and Diana was only 20, reports CambridgeLive.
In Andrew Morton’s book ‘Diana: In Her Own Words’, it is revealed that Princess Diana received a touching note from Prince Charles the night before their wedding.
She remembered: “He sent me a very nice signet ring the night before to Clarence House, with the Prince of Wales feathers on and a very nice card that said: ‘I’m so proud of you and when you come up I’ll be there at the altar for you tomorrow. ‘Just look ’em in the eye and knock ’em dead.”
The couple tied the knot less than 24 hours later in a grand ceremony at St Paul’s Cathedral on July 29, 1981, which was viewed by an estimated 750 million people across 74 countries.
Reflecting on the day, Diana confessed: “I remember being so in love with my husband that I couldn’t take my eyes off him. I just absolutely thought I was the luckiest girl in the world. He was going to look after me.”
After 15 years of matrimony, the couple divorced on August 28, 1996, leaving behind two sons, Prince William and Prince Harry.
Discussing their relationship post-divorce, historian and Royal expert Marlene Koenig told the Daily Express: “I think they came to an understanding.
“I think she was aware that Camilla was the one and she wasn’t. But the thing was they actually met the day of the Decree Nisi not the Absolute and they actually talked and met and sat down and Diana told a reporter – and I remember this – after this she wished she could have made their love letters public because she knew Charles loved her in the beginning.
“But it was never meant to be. It was an arranged marriage. But they hadn’t had time to get to know each other, court each other. They learned a lot from that mistake.”
