Little-known 20p solution that will keep drivers safe on the roads this winter

A simple little-known 20p tip could help road users avoid an accident while behind the wheel this winter.

Tim Rodie, resident driving expert at Motorpoint has warned that using a piece of change could tell motorists everything they need to know about tyre pressures.

Sticking a 20p coin between tyre grooves can show whether a wheel is fully inflated and safe to use.

Mr Rodie explained: “When temperatures start to drop, it’s essential that motorists check their tyre tread to make sure it’s safe for them to drive on snow or ice.

“Legally, all cars are required to have a minimum of 1.6mm thread across the central 75 percent of any tyre surface, but the easiest way to check this at home is to take a 20p piece and insert it into the grooves on each of your tyres.

“If you can’t see the outer band on the coin then you’re above the legal limit and are safe to drive.

“Motorists should also be mindful of their tyre pressure, as incorrect tyre pressure will reduce tyre grip and increase braking distances – ultimately putting you at greater risk of an accident.”

According to Continental Tyres, maintaining correct tyre pressures is vital in the colder winter months. Sticking the right air pressure can ensure vehicles run with optimal traction and grip on any road surface.

Meanwhile, the correctly inflated tyres will give motorists better fuel efficiency and reduce CO2 emissions.

They warn that tyre pressures will be affected by the temperatures so must be monitored. For every 10 degrees Celsius drop, tyre pressures will fall between 0.07 and 0.14 bars.

They added: “Inflating your winter tyres according to your car manufacturer’s recommendation helps maintain good traction and handling on slippery icy surfaces, no matter the temperature change. Obviously, the same goes for all-season tyres.”

TyreSafe warns motorists should conduct the 20p tyre to monitor pressures at least once a month.

The test should also be done at three different locations around the tyre to ensure the whole diameter is safe.

They commented: “Along with checking your vehicle tyre pressure, checking your tyre tread with a 20p coin ahead of your next MOT is also a great way to help ensure your vehicle will pass first time.”
