Lindsay Hoyle LIVE: Speaker fights for political survival after '55 no confidence votes'

Sir Lindsay Hoyle is fighting for political survival after 55 votes of no confidence have reportedly been submitted.

It comes after the Speaker of the House of Commons, who is previously a Labour MP, sparked fury yesterday after allowing a Labour amendment to the SNP’s Gaza motion,

The motion reads: “That this House has no confidence in Mr Speaker”.

It is understood that top Tories are now considering putting forward Staffordshire Moorlands MP Karen Bradley, and are looking into whether she has enough cross-party support to run for the role.

Sir Lindsay Hoyle would not be forced to step down if a vote of no confidence passed in the House of Commons but it would make his position even more difficult as both the SNP and Tories were left furious vover yesterday’s news.

According to House of Commons tradition, only the current Tory Government can amend an opposition motion but Sir Lindsay chose Labour’s amendment as well as the government’s.
