National Guard troops have now arrived in Los Angeles, following orders from Donald Trump to stamp out ongoing protests against deportations.
California Governor Gavin Newsom has urged the Trump adminstration to rescind the order, calling it “unlawful”.
Around 300 reservist soldiers have been stationed outside various locations across the city where police have used tear gas and fired rubber bullets against protestors who have lit fires and attacked police vehicles.
Defense secretary Pete Hegseth has threatened to send in the Marines, though doing so would require invoking the Insurrection Act which hasn’t happened since the large-scale demonstrations that erupted following the aquittal of police officers who beat Rodney King.
The deployment comes after two days of unrest, with protesters taking to the streets in a bid to block federal immigration authorities from carrying out deportations.
The move by the former President has sparked a strong reaction from activists, as clashes continue between demonstrators and federal agents at multiple sites.
