King Charles: What happened in minutes before cancer diagnosis was made public

King Charles has “a form of cancer,” a Buckingham Palace announcement has confirmed. When the news was released at 6pm, the world’s media leapt into action, with full blown reports already available to read and watch.

Whether it’s Express.co.uk, the BBC or another media outlet, editors and producers are given a short period of notice prior to the announcement when it comes to a story of significance.

The media receives a press pack that will include a statement from the institution concerned – in this case Buckingham Palace – as well as essential background information.

Crucially, this information is strictly embargoed until a specific time when it can be published. In that time, reporters, editors and broadcasters scramble to prepare their articles, interviews and reaction.

Meanwhile, it has emerged that Prince Harry will travel to the UK to see his father in the wake of the bombshell cancer diagnosis. The King personally told his youngest son of his diagnosis.

The 75-year-old made sure that all of his immediate family were told as early as possible, including his siblings and children, with those in the country being given the news in person.

In a statement, Buckingham Palace said: “During The King’s recent hospital procedure for benign prostate enlargement, a separate issue of concern was noted. Subsequent diagnostic tests have identified a form of cancer.

“His Majesty has today commenced a schedule of regular treatments, during which time he has been advised by doctors to postpone public-facing duties. Throughout this period, His Majesty will continue to undertake State business and official paperwork as usual.

“The King is grateful to his medical team for their swift intervention, which was made possible thanks to his recent hospital procedure. He remains wholly positive about his treatment and looks forward to returning to full public duty as soon as possible.

“His Majesty has chosen to share his diagnosis to prevent speculation and in the hope it may assist public understanding for all those around the world who are affected by cancer.”
