King Charles masterstroke: Monarch 'kept counsel' to steer clear of Prince Harry saga

King Charles’s first year as monarch as received praise from experts, particularly his dealing with the furore surrounding claims made by son Prince Harry.

Appearing on Pod Save the King, royal writer Russell Myers described his first 12 months on the throne as “fairly solid”.

He opined: “It seemed like Harry was really trying to drive a wrecking ball through the Royal Family, and of course, that was in the lead-up as things were coming to a head for the King’s coronation.”

But Charles kept a steady head and didn’t let it get to him, or at least, let it show. Myers added: “I think it’s been fairly solid from him. I mean, what more can he do, apart from coming out and denouncing his son for all of his misdemeanors and all of his sort of mudslinging at the family.

“I think he needs to keep his counsel and not get involved in that. And, what can he do? He’s got on with the job.”

Myers is hoping for “a bit more calm in the camp” but admits, he’s said that several times this year.

Charles’s first year was “slow and steady” and there “wasn’t a rush to get to the commonwealths” but in 2024, he is expected to make tours of Australia and Canada.

Myers assesses: “You’ve seen with the hardest working royal list, obviously Princess Anne was always going to be top of that, but he (Charles) was very, very, very close behind, and he’s not normally in that sphere.

“He wanted to attack the job by saying, ‘What can I do?’ and that was literally, getting on with things.”

Myers talks about 2023 starting off with Spare, then an interview, then another interview, and he’s hoping for a more positive beginning to 2024.

He says of the Sussexes: “One would hope would there would be less conversation, from their point of view, not necessarily ours, about Harry and his various gripes about the Royal Family and how he was treated, leading up to his exit.”
