King Charles is still getting used to ‘the idea that he might be popular’

King Charles strives to be a king of the people, which is what we saw on Monday, when leaving the hospital. Charles went out of his way to reassure the public that he’s okay — by waving and pointing out to the fans who gathered — says a body language expert.

Daily Express UK spoke to body language expert Judi James, who says, “We are being told via these gestures that the King is well and back to working level.”

She adds: “Continuity is important for the royals and it would almost be an obligation for him, especially given his age, to reassure the public.”

In video of Charles leaving the hospital, he’s seen frowning and a little frustrated, but when he sees the crowds, “his expression changes to one of gratitude and slightly puzzled delight, as though he still struggles modestly with the idea that he might be popular,” says Ms James.

Queen Camilla accompanied Charles to hospital the day he was admitted, and visited him every day, several times a day, while he was in recovery. On his last day, she was there, too, and walked out with him.

James talks about the married couple’s differing dispositions: “Here are two very relieved royals performing two very different greeting rituals towards the press and the fans.”

“Although Camilla walks out beside her husband her wave is totally different, sending out a contrasting set of messages.”

“Her hand is held low in the wave and she does not include any eye contact, instead looking downwards. Her greeting seems to be letting the public know that Charles is in safe hands now but, importantly for her role in the marriage, Camilla seems to accept the fact that this is Charles’s moment and she needs to keep in the background.”
