‘Kill moss in lawns fast’ while making the grass ‘greener and thicker’ with 1 crucial item

Moss grows in lawns due to soil compaction and excess thatch. Shade, soil type, drainage, and incorrect lawn care practices also cause moss to grow in lawns.

Due to the damp and dark conditions that moss needs to grow in, it often grows during spring and autumn.

Moss can quickly take over and out-compete your grass, causing long-term damage that’s tricky to repair.

It is important to remove moss from your lawn to make sure your lawn stays strong, healthy, and looks luscious and green.

Unsure of how to remove and stop moss growing in her lawn after mowing the grass, Teresa Keogh took to the Gardening Hints and Tips Facebook page to ask for some advice. She said: “Just cut a lawn full of moss how can I get more grass less moss?”

Taking to the comments section, some group members suggested raking the moss out, while others recommended a specialised product to tackle the issue – iron sulphate, specifically Pro-Kleen Iron Sulphate.

Pro-Kleen Iron Sulphate can be picked up from B&Q for £13.95 or online at Amazon for £16.95.

The product is essentially an iron-rich and long-lasting fertiliser that will encourage strong growth and healthy dark green grass while removing moss at the same time.

Glenn Mallinson wrote: “Buy the Pro-Kleen Iron Sulphate, cut lawn, spray with the sulphate, all your moss will die off and go black, then rake out, spray again, leave, reseed, and cover with topsoil.

“My lawn was full, but adopting the above it’s become less maintenance year on year. Don’t be scared either, you’ll think you have ruined your lawn, but you will be fine.”

Demi Lition commented: “The Pro-Kleen Iron Sulphate is the way to go but take it easy on the dosage as it may destroy the healthy lawn too.

“When moss goes brown rake it out. Then you need to sow some lawn seeds in the empty areas and apply a layer of topsoil as your existing lawn won’t cover that empty area before weeds do or more moss grows.”

Andrew Levett wrote: “Iron sulphate, I do mine once a year to fix this. A lush green lawn looks so much nicer than patchy old moss and weeds. I use the one from Pro-Kleen.”
