Keeping between two figures can help motorists save hundreds on petrol and diesel bills

The online vehicle buyer BigWantsYourCar.com has shared how motorists are able to improve the fuel economy of their car by keeping an eye on one figure.

With the cost of car insurance and road tax on the rise, many motorists are looking to save money wherever possible when they get behind the wheel.

Peter Waddell, CEO of BigWantsYourCar.com suggested that one way drivers can do this is by changing when they shift gears in their car.

He advised: “Efficient gear usage is a game-changer for fuel efficiency and cost savings. Aim to shift gears as soon as you hit the higher end of the economical rpm band – between 1,500 and 2,500rpm for petrol and 1,300 to 2,000rpm for diesel.

“Consider the importance of driving in the highest possible gear for your vehicle within the speed limit. This technique is a simple yet effective way to boost miles per gallon and cut down on petrol and diesel expenses.”

Whilst The AA highlighted that the cost of petrol and diesel fell during January 2024 to an average of 139.8p and 147.8p per litre respectively, drivers can still save a considerable amount of money by altering when they change gears.

Peter noted that, by keeping an eye on the rev-counter or tachometer in a car, motorists can reduce how much the engine is working so less fuel is burnt.

This typically means shifting to a higher gear sooner than normal, or accelerating at a gentler pace if a driver owns an automatic vehicle.

Peter also warned that drivers should avoid being aggressive behind the wheel, noting that harsh braking and acceleration can easily increase fuel economy.

He added: “Avoid aggressive driving habits, such as rapid acceleration and sudden braking, as they can increase fuel consumption by up to 20 percent.

“Optimal fuel economy speeds vary among cars, influenced by factors like road conditions, weight and weather.”

Another way in which motorists can save money on their fuel bills is being selective with when they use functions of the car such as air conditioning and heating.

Whilst warming up the interior can make drivers feel more comfortable on cold mornings, the heating system adds extra pressure on the engine.

As a result, Transpoco Telematics noted that switching off taxing features can improve fuel economy by at least four percent.
