Jeremy Hunt confirms date of the next Budget, as reports emerge of major tax giveaway

The Treasury has just confirmed the date of the upcoming Spring Budget, as reports begin to emerge that Jeremy Hunt and Rishi Sunak are planning a major tax giveaway.

In a statement this lunchtime, the Treasury confirmed Mr Hunt will reveal his last pre-election tax cuts on March 6.

Mr Hunt has also commissioned an economic and fiscal forecast from the Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR), something Liz Truss famously rejected and caused panic in the financial markets.

The date is already raising eyebrows, as it is a week or two earlier than usual, which could hint at a spring election in April or May.

Mr Hunt’s Budget will be a make-or-break moment for the Conservatives, who need to reassure voters they remain the party of low taxes.

The news from the Treasury comes on the same day reports emerged that the Government is planning some major vote-winning tax cuts.

One suggestion is Mr Sunak and Mr Hunt could move to abolish Inheritance Tax altogether, a move that would be incredibly popular given the so-called “death tax” is the most hated levy of all according to voters when polled.
