Jamie Oliver’s ‘delicious’ chocolate mug cake recipe takes 3 minutes to make

Nothing can beat a homemade chocolate cake, but you do not have to spend ages cooking or shopping for ingredients to make a cosy treat for yourself.

Mug cakes are becoming increasingly popular online, and Jamie Oliver has shared how to make a proper ‘hug in a mug’ inspired by his children finding failing recipes online.

In a video online, Jamie said: “Mug cakes are the only thing that seems to engage my teenagers in the art of cooking at the moment. They see it on TikTok or Snapchat or whatever other platforms they’re sharing around.

“They come up with these incredible recipes that generally never work if I’m honest. So I thought I would give you a delicious mug cake that does work and is amazing. “

This recipe only around three minutes to make is perfect for a treat, especially since this weekend is also National Chocolate Cake Day. Jamie said: “It’s so easy, it’s so fast and it’s so reliable and it’s so delicious.”

In his recipe, Jamie is using leftover chocolate from Christmastime since it is January but you can use any chocolate you like. He said: “The idea is that you pick the one that you like.”

Jamie also explained you can also use chocolate or whichever ingredients you prefer for the filling of your mug cake.

He said: “If you wanted to use different things for different flavours, you could use a little lemon zest in there if you wanted to make it a little bit lighter, you could use ginger and syrup to give it a little vibe.

“You could use chocolate chips, you could flavour it with a little coffee. You can just have fun with it.

Jamie called to use a very ripe banana in a mug cake. He said: “If you get the ripe ones, they’re a little bit more butterscotch-ey, even caramel-ery.”

Olive oil is also perfect for cakes according to Jamie. He said: “Olive oil is very much used in the south of Europe for cakes instead of butter which is more northern.

“What it gives you is a really nice spongy [cake]. A bit more bouncy, and it’s really good so use olive oil.”

Instructions

1. To begin, place the small banana, olive oil, self-raising flour, dark sugar, salt and egg into your mixing bowl (or food processor).

2. Mix all the ingredients together for one minute until the batter is nice and smooth.

3. Use a spatula to divide the mixture into four equal portions and pour it into four mugs. The batter should roughly be around two centimetres in depth in the mug.

4. Take your chocolate and stick it in the middle of the batter in the mug.

5. Place one mug in the microwave and cook it on full power for one-and-a-half minutes

6. Your delicious cake in a mug is now ready to eat

Jamie said: “It’s that simple! You’re going to love it.”

He added: “If you wish, these uncooked ones can go in the fridge and can be cooked to order…but this for me is a beautiful thing.

“Serve it with some yoghurt, serve with some ice-cream, serve with some custard…it’s a really good little sponge.”
