Chips are a staple on dinner tables across the nation and making them yourself isn’t as hard as it sounds. The ingredients are simple and homemade chips require little effort to make.

As reported by the Mirror, chef Jamie Oliver has revealed the one type of potato you should use to make homemade chips. He explained how the choice of potato can have an impact on the overall taste of the chips. Other than the one type of potato, home chefs only need oil and seasoning of their choice to make great chips.

Jamie named the Maris Piper potato as the best one to make homemade chips. He also recommends seasoning such as salt, garlic powder, paprika and cheese powder to help give extra flavour.

Maris Piper potatoes are ideal for chips as they can become fluffy on the inside while remaining crispy on the outside. They have a high starch and low moisture content.

The potatoes are available in all UK supermarkets. They have a starting cost of around £1.80 which means it’s much cheaper to make your own chips.

It takes a total time of around 40 minutes to make homemade chips. To serve four people, all you need is 800g of Maris Piper potatoes, sunflower oil and seasoning of your choice.

To start, add 8cm deep of sunflower oil to a large pan on medium to high heat. Let the temperature reach above 140C before adding your peeled and sliced raw chips.

You should let the chips cook for around eight minutes. Once they become soft, simply transfer them to a tray to cool down.

Before adding the chips back into the oil, make sure the temperature hits 180C. Let the chips cook until they reach a golden brown colour, and are crispy on the outside and soft on the inside.

The final step is to add a seasoning of your choice to the chips. Then you can tuck in and enjoy!
