Jacket potatoes cook “perfectly crispy” when one step is added during the baking process, according to a chef. Jacket potatoes are a popular meal for many Brits and in easy steps, they can make a tasty and filling lunch or dinner. They can be cooked in the air fryer but the usual method for making jacket potatoes is to bake them in the oven and many swear by this for the very best results.
One cook, the founder of Gimme Some Oven, Ali Martin, shared her “best” jacket potato recipe and cooking method and it’s one that she says makes it “perfectly crispy” every time. She includes many of the usual steps, such as poking the potatoes before they go into the oven and cutting and fluffing them afterwards. But there is an added step that she uses that might not be familiar to many – even those who enjoy jacket potatoes on the regular.
About halfway through cooking her jacket potato in the oven, Ali removes it.
She first bakes it for 25 minutes and when she removes the potato from the oven, and uses a pastry brush to brush the potato with melted butter or oil and then sprinkles over salt.
The chef then places it back into the oven and cooks it for a further 20 minutes. To create her perfectly crispy jacket potato, Ali uses four simple ingredients: A russet potato, butter or olive oil, kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper.
Then, there are only six simple steps to follow. Here is the method for making the “perfectly crispy” jacket potato with this one added step.
- Place your potato on a baking tray with a baking sheet underneath it.
- Poke the potato with a fork several times to stop it exploding.
- Bake for 25 minutes at 230C.
- Remove it frm the oven and brush over butter or olive oil, then sprinkle on a generous amount of salt.
- Cook again for 20 minutes.
- Remove the potato from the oven, cut it and fluff it and add your favourite jacket potato toppings.
Ali shared a number of other tips for making a delicious jacket potato. She revealed the same baked potato can be made in the microwave but it will not be as crispy.
Additionally, she said that a vegan version can be made, using vegan butter or high-heat cooking oil.
