Former NFL quarterback Philip Rivers may be retired, but he has a football team of his own.
Rivers and his wife Tiffany are expecting their 10th child together, the couple confirmed to AL.com on Thursday. Rivers, who has served as the head football coach of St. Michael Catholic in Fairhope, Alabama, following 17 seasons in the NFL, said they are having a boy.
“We are all fired up,” Rivers said. “Everyone was pulling for a boy. Even our girls wanted a boy.”
Rivers and Tiffany, junior high sweethearts who tied the knot in 2001, share seven daughters – Halle, Caroline, Grace, Sarah, Rebecca, Clare, and Anna – and two sons – Gunner and Peter – ranging from ages 21 to four.
“We’ve had one pretty much every two years and now this is the longest gap,” Rivers told AL.com.
Rivers previously told the IndyStar, part of the USA TODAY Network, that he and Tiffany weren’t going to put a number on how many children they wanted. Rivers only has two siblings himself, but his mother and grandfather come from families of nine.
“We thought we would be the third generation of nine, but we decided to go double digits,” Rivers told AL.com, before adding that “we didn’t decide it. God decided.”
He said they haven’t decided on a name yet, but everyone is “excited and ultimately just thankful.”
The eight-time Pro Bowler retired from the NFL following the 2020 season. He played 16 seasons with the San Diego/Los Angeles Chargers and his final year with the Indianapolis Colts. The Colts finished the 2021 season 11-5, clinching an AFC wild-card spot before losing to 27-24 to the Buffalo Bills.
