If you’re recently moved into a new property or are in the progress of moving, it can be daunting to think about how you want to decorate it. Even if you’re just looking to redo your current home, it can be overwhelming to decide on a style.

While it’s always possible to hire an interior designer to help you with your decorating needs, there might not always be room for that service in your budget. Instead, one interior designer has shared her go-to tips she gives to clients, and it’s so easy that you can do it yourself without spending any money.

Clare, known online as Cotswold Claire, is an interior expert with years of experience in helping clients with their renovation and home decorating needs. Taking to social media, she shared her biggest tips she shares to people who ask what they should think about when decorating their homes.

“I’m gonna share with you now, and when I do share this it always blows people’s minds. How to create a home that feels like it has been designed by a pro, designed by an interior designer,” she said at the start of her video.

And the tips has all to do with picking the colours you want to decorate your home with.

“[It’s as] simple as locking in your colour choices, between five and seven colours that you bring into your home and you only use those colours,” Claire shared. “I’m gonna break down now how to do that. I didn’t realise that people didn’t know it, but it is such an easy way.”

She then held up her collection of colour charts, the ones that you can pick up for free decoration and paint stores or have ordered from different paint companies.

Opening one of the paint charts, she said: “These are gated by experts. There’s a lot of science that goes into how they grouped the colours within them, but you don’t need to know that because they’ve done the hard work for you.”

“Any colour that runs along the horizontal of these are colours that you want to look in,” she explained.

Going into details about how it works, Claire randomly picked a colour called Pea Green, and went on to explain how you should go about picking colours that would go well with that specific shade of green.

“Looking back at our colour chart, this is the pea green that we are starting with. So any of these colours above and below will also work. These are tones and tints of the same pea green, they’re the same undertones, but they’ve had either more white or more black added into that.

“Looking back at our colour chart, this is the pea green that we are starting with,” Claire said, pointing to the shade. “So any of these colours above and below will also work. These are tones and tints of the same pea green, they’re the same undertones, but they’ve had either more white or more black added into that.”

If you want to pick other colours that would go with that shade of green, she said: “If you follow along the horizontal, as I’ve mentioned, anything along this line will also work together.”

She then used the colour chart to share how she would use it to help clients pick colours for their home, such as picking a suitable neutral shade from the same horizontal line, along with a shade of dark pink and a navy blue. After having picked five colours from the same line, she said you should use these to decorate your home.

However, she then shared a disclaimer: “It’s also important to remember, and this is where people often slip up, is that you don’t need to represent those five colours all in paintwork.”

Instead, she said you should pick two or three colours to paint the walls, ceiling, or any furniture. And then the other colours can be added as decor accents, such as in rugs, sofas, or curtains.

“And you want to represent those five colours throughout every room in your house, and you’ll then end up with a home that feels like it’s been developed by a pro,” Claire said.
