Interior designer shares 7 things wealthy clients never have

An interior designer has revealed the seven things she never sees in the homes of her wealthy clients. Bri Macdonald said: “I know creating a home that feels luxurious doesn’t always require a hefty budget. Instead, it’s often about avoiding common decorations and designs that can cheapen your space.”

She added: “That said, there are a few things I’ve noticed wealthy clients rarely have in their homes. If you want your home to feel high-end, you may want to avoid them, too.”

In a candid interview with Business Insider, Bri revealed the design trends and items that her wealthy clients wouldn’t dare do.

1. Overly-trendy decor

Bri said decorating your home according to current trends can “quickly make a space feel outdated”. She said an expensive-looking home contains “timeless, simple elements” like neutral colour palettes, and materials such as wood, marble, or leather.

2. Clutter

Surfaces such as coffee tables, shelves, and countertops should be kept sparse, with statement items such as vases or a few curated books, Bri says.

3. Cheap fake plants

“Cheap, artificial plants can detract from an otherwise polished design,” said Bri. “Instead, I suggest elevating your space with fresh greenery or high-quality faux plants that closely mimic the real thing.”

She recommends low-maintenance plants such as olive trees, and if you must have fake greenery, be sure to dust them regularly.

4. Mass-produced art

This kind of art can make a home feel impersonal, Bri says. Focus instead on unique peices, such as original artwork, limited editions, or family photos in high-quality frames.

5. Poor quality or outdated hardware

Small details such as cabinet handles can have a dramatic impact on the look of a home, says Bri. Polished nickel, brass, or matte black are the best options for these.

6. Messy cords and exposed wires

This can make an area look cluttered, Bri warns. She encourages solutions such as hiding wires in walls, or furniture with built-in cord storage.

7. Poorly-measured or low-quality curtains or blinds

Custom items tailored specifically to your home’s aesthetic are always the way to go, says Bri. “Fabrics such as linen or velvet are my favorites, and I love layering sheer panels with blackout curtains to achieve a perfect balance of style and functionality,” she said.
