Escape the urban jungle and immerse yourself in the tranquillity of Aldington, a picturesque village teeming with celebrities. If you’re yearning for a break from the relentless pace of city life, this idyllic retreat could be your perfect spring getaway. Nestled within the verdant landscapes of Kent, this quintessential English village and civil parish spans just 18.23 km2 and boasts a close-knit community of slightly over 1,500 residents.

Despite its modest size, Aldington is a bustling hub of activity, hosting annual events like the Soap Box Derby that attract visitors nationwide. The village’s strong sense of community is reflected in its local football team and pitch, tennis courts, children’s playground, outdoor adult gym, and OFSTED-approved schools.

It’s no wonder that this charming locale has become a sanctuary for celebrities, with stars such as Vic Reeves, Julian Clary, and the late Paul O’Grady calling it home.

Rumour has it that comedian Alan Carr also resides here, although this remains unconfirmed.

No visit to Aldington would be complete without a trip to the Port Lympne Hotel and Reserve, described as an ‘unforgettable safari experience set against hundreds of acres of stunning Kentish savannah’.

Here, you can encounter tigers, lions, wolves, and even the occasional rhino up close, reports the Mirror.

The sanctuary, far from being a conventional zoo, is dedicated to the care of rare and endangered species, and even offers guests the chance to stay in glamping pods or wooden lodges.

For those who adore the great outdoors, there are countless walks nearby showcasing the pristine beauty of the countryside.

And if you fancy greeting the dawn with a cup of coffee and some retail therapy, Ashford’s Designer Outlet is merely a 15-minute drive away.

“Another attractive quality is the village of Aldington’s rich history, with more than 50 buildings of historical or architectural interest found within the parish, including Noel Coward and Joseph Conrad’s former homes,” highlighted the experts at Stevens and Co.

“Today Aldington has an incredibly low crime rate, so it might surprise you to learn that the village has a strong association with smuggling folklore in the shape of The Aldington Gang – infamous smugglers who roamed the shores of Kent plying their trade, before making The Walnut Tree in Aldington their headquarters and drop for their contraband.”

A mere two-and-a-half-hour drive separates Aldington from London, but if you’re keen on slashing that time, hopping on a train could halve your journey.

Direct trains depart from the capital every few hours, and you can snag a ticket for as little as £19 for a one-way trip.

Despite its petite size, Aldington offers a selection of holiday rentals to fit various budgets. For instance, a weekend getaway (Friday, March 28-30) in a cosy one-bedroom holiday home will cost you £235, assuming two people are sharing.

If you’re after more room, a four-bedroom property is available for £975 for the same dates.
