Inside Clare Balding’s quiet life in leafy village-like London suburb

Clare Balding has spent thirty years in broadcasting, earning her reputation as one of the nation’s most respected and recognisable presenters. The 54-year-old consistently appears on screens annually to host the Wimbledon Championships, this year alongside Isa Guha.

While Clare is no stranger to the sporting spotlight, having overseen coverage of prominent sporting events such as the Olympic Games, Paralympic Games, Grand National, and Commonwealth Games, she does enjoy some downtime at her home in a leafy London suburb.

The sports anchor swaps Wimbledon’s famous SW19 postcode for the affluent and desirable West London neighbourhood of Chiswick, known for its balance of city and village life. Despite being in zone three, the suburban spot is popular among residents for its green spaces, beautiful riverside and attractive period properties, with the average semi-detached home fetching £1.1million.

A peek into Clare Balding’s cosy home shows that she shares her life with her wife, Alice Arnold, in their lovely family house.

They’ve happily made Chiswick their home since Alice playfully told Clare: “We can live anywhere you want, as long as it’s Chiswick.”

Fans of the BBC journalist got a charming look at Clare’s space during an episode of Celebrity Googlebox. Her inviting living room featured a comfy cream sofa and cheerful red cushions set against a soft grey background.

During the 2021 Spring Lectures for The Upper Room, Clare expressed her love for the W4 area, revealing that she enjoys the simple pleasures of Chiswick.

“I make sure I walk every day, so the tow path between Chiswick Bridge and Kew Bridge is very well trodden for me”, she said.

The London suburb has long been home to Clare and Alice, who got married in 2015 moments from their home at Chiswick House.

Clare admitted to the Mirror that she and Alice love the simple home comforts of their luxe city property, such as watching TV together.

Speaking about their relationship, which blossomed in 2002 after they initially met in 1999, the BBC star said: “We are very easy together. We don’t row. I don’t know how we achieve that but I don’t think there is a secret. You’re on this wonderful adventure together. I’m always saying to Alice, ‘Let’s do this – it will be fun’.”

While the couple doesn’t give much away about their personal lives, locals will no doubt have spotted Clare out and about in the community.

She told the Evening Standard that one of her favourite things about Chiswick is that you don’t feel like you’re living in London, but it still retains the “perfect London feel”.

“All the stallholders at Chiswick farmers’ market know me and know their racing so we’re always chatting,” the Wimbledon commentator said.
