A father died and two of his children were hurt after a hand grenade exploded at an Indiana home Saturday, authorities said.
The family was going through a grandfather’s belongings when they found the grenade at their Lakes of the Four Seasons, Indiana, home. The Lake County Sheriff’s Department said someone “pulled the pin on the device and it detonated.”
Officers responded to the explosion at around 6:30 p.m. local time Saturday. They found an unresponsive man and two injured teens at the scene, the sheriff’s department said in a Facebook post.
It was unclear if the grenade exploded inside the house. Police did not immediately respond to a request for comment from USA TODAY.
Father dead, his two children transported to nearby hospital
The sheriff’s department said the father was later declared dead. Responders took his two children, a 14-year-old boy and 18-year-old woman, to a hospital with shrapnel wounds, the sheriff’s department said.
Officers called the Porter County Bomb Squad to secure the area and “determine whether there may be additional explosive devices,” the sheriff’s department said.
The Lake County Sheriff’s Department Homicide detectives and CSI unit are investigating the incident.
