‘I’m a professional gardener – best way to remove moss from lawns that works every time’

Moss is not technically a weed if you aren’t growing it on purpose, but it may as well be one.

Moss is a simple and ancient plant with a shallow root system. It is an opportunistic plant that will take hold wherever it can.

In your lawn, that means moss will grow anywhere that your grass is not thick enough to crowd it out.

Luckily, it is not very difficult to get rid of moss in your lawn, according to one professional gardener.

Taking to the Gardening Hints and Tips Facebook page, one woman asked what to do with her lawn that’s “all moss”. Having already tried a type of moss killer treatment that “didn’t work”, she asked for advice on what to use instead.

Posting a picture of her moss-infested lawn, Parisa Brandsey said: “Hello fellow gardeners! We moved into a new house a few months ago and this is our lawn in the backyard, it’ll all moss.

“Front yard looks the same as well. My husband purchased this moss killer and it was supposed to work within hours. Well, it didn’t work and it’s been almost 24 hours.

“When he tried to rake the moss, there was more underneath. He is worried about using other products out there because according to some reviews, they can stain the surrounding area.

“We need help with getting rid of all this moss. We have had issues with moss before but not to this extent. We appreciate your help.”

Having spotted Parisa’s Facebook post, a professional gardener took to the comments section to suggest his advice.

Chris Watson wrote: “Lawn sand is unreal it’s the best for lawn moss! Apply it wait a few weeks and rake it out.

“The dead moss will turn black. I’m a professional gardener and it works every time.”

Lawn sand is a lawn care product that typically consists of a mixture of sand, iron sulphate and occasionally fertiliser in very small quantities.

Chris even shared a picture of the specific lawn sand he recommends and that’s the Westland Lawn Sand Plant Feed that can be picked up from B&Q for £19.

Lawn sand can help control moss in lawns. It contains ingredients like iron sulphate, which can have a moss-killing effect.

The iron sulphate in lawn sand can give your grass a deeper green colour, making your lawn look more vibrant and appealing.

However, gardeners should be aware that using too much lawn sand or applying it incorrectly can have negative consequences for your lawn. Over-application can result in burned or damaged grass.
