'I’m a lawyer – this common mistake drivers make when insuring cars is actually illegal'

A lawyer on TikTok has warned about the common mistake drivers make when insuring their cars – which could be illegal.

Posting on the social media platform, the tiktokstreetlawyer said: “Are you a parent or carer who got car insurance as the main driver but you lied to the insurance company because you are not the ‘main driver’? In fact, it’s your son or daughter who is the ‘main driver’.

“And you got car insurance because it’s a hell of a lot more cheaper car insurance for little Johnny or Jenny to drive their car as the ‘named driver’ than as the ‘main driver’.

“I hear you, it’s outrageous the high car insurance for young drivers and something needs to be done about it to be fair to everyone including young drivers, but mate what you’ve done is a crime of fraud commonly known as ‘fronting’.”

In the video, the lawyer explained the potential ramifications of this action. They said: “Hard to prove, but easy to confess to.

“If you do get found out you face void car insurance, a big payout from your own pocket for any damage or injury caused, and if the case goes to court, a criminal record, a driving ban, and in more serious cases, possible prison. It feels like a long shot I know but drive safe and legal.”

The TikToker’s video comes as more questions are asked about the cost of car insurance in the UK after data found prices had skyrocketed in recent years. GB News reported that drivers were paying around 25 percent more in 2023 than they had been in 2022.

Speaking about the rise, the Director of German Insurance Policy at the Association for British Insurers (ABI) Mervyn Skeet said: “We’re acutely aware of the impact that rising motor insurance premiums continue to have on motorists.

“Rising repair costs and other factors outside of insurers’ control mean there is no single action that could bring down premiums.

“However, we are determined to do all we can to put the brake on. We are working with our members to understand what actions can be taken to help motorists manage costs.”
