'I’m a heating expert – Brits are making these boiler mistakes that can increase bills’

The cost of living crisis has caused energy bills to skyrocket this year, prompting Brits across the country to come up with their own solutions.

While some boiler hacks may seem helpful at first, sometimes they can lead to costly mistakes that can make your bills go up.

Catherine Storer, an insulation expert from ESS, has warned homeowners about a fundamental error that could result in surging energy bills.

Given the current escalation in energy bills contributing to the overall cost of living crisis, individuals in Britain are being advised by experts like Storer to pay attention to recommendations on effectively heating their homes, aiming to keep expenditures manageable.

While turning off your boiler overnight may appear to be a quick solution for cost-cutting, it offers only short-term relief and carries potential long-term consequences.

Regularly shutting down the boiler can result in system inefficiencies and safety issues, so consistent operation is crucial to ensure both safety and prolonged boiler life.

While it may be tempting to power down devices such as Wi-Fi routers to save on energy costs, this practice can inadvertently lead to technical complications.

Frequent power cycling can introduce faults and diminish the lifespan of appliances.

Opting for energy-efficient models or employing smart usage is a more prudent approach, mirroring the strategy applied to your boiler.

The expert explained: “The key to managing your energy bills more effectively isn’t in turning off your appliances but in ensuring they are running efficiently.

“Regular maintenance, especially for boilers, is vital,” she emphasised.

Storer pointed out: “A well-maintained boiler not only operates more efficiently but also prevents the potentially high costs of emergency repairs.”

Energy conservation is crucial, but it requires a thoughtful approach.

Rather than outrightly powering down appliances, consider adjusting settings like the thermostat on your boiler, offering significant savings without compromising the appliance’s functionality or your comfort.
