Valentine’s Day is just around the corner and if you’re not sure on what to get your lover well you can’t go wrong with some flowers. In fact some might say flowers are a must.
However, the red roses that have become synonymous with the special occasion might not be the type you want to gift your Valentine this year, because according to this expert, red roses go against everything that Valentine’s Day is truly about.
Craig Wilson is the founder of Gardeners Dream, an online garderning retailer and he revealed just why you should give red roses a miss this year.
The gardening expert said: “Believe it or not, the flower most commonly associated with Valentine’s Day has quite the opposite connotation.
“Roses in the darkest shade of red might seem sultry and romantic, however, they can be a symbol of sorrow – which is not the emotion you want to be portraying to your loved one on the 14th.”
But worry not, it doesn’t mean you have to throw out roses as an option completely. For those who don’t like change, Craig Wilson suggests trying out “roses in a more vibrant red hue.”
There are also many other flowers that are a great option for Valentine’s Day. According to the Gardners Dream founder, red azaleas are just as great as your classic bouquet of roses.
He said: “Outside or roses, red azaleas have been our most popular flower in the lead-up to Valentine’s Day and can make an equally romantic gift.
“Purchased in its shrub form as a long-lasting gift or incorprorated into a busy bouquet, it is not wonder why this beautiful vibrant red flower is increasing in popularity in the lead-up to the month of love.”
Fancy more options? Pink Hydrangea are also a recommendation as the “big bold, hydrangeas make for a breathtaking addition to any bouquet.” The gardening expert swears by the flowers as he adds that hydrangeas in a bouquet will surely “wow your loved one.”
Another flower that is also a “beautiful addition to any bouquet” are rhododendrons, which are according to Craig “a must-purchase flower this Valentine’s Day.”
There are two ways you can go about gifting your loved one with these flowers, he said: “You can either ask your florist to include them in a bouquet or if you think your Valentine will cherish a gift that keeps on giving, then you can purchase a shrub that can be planted in the garden.”
