'I’m a gardening expert and this is the exact time to mow your lawn this month'

As temperatures rise and April showers abound, gardeners across the UK are gearing up for the spring gardening season.

However, with the unpredictable weather patterns expected in the coming weeks, it’s essential to approach lawn care with caution.

To help gardeners navigate the challenges of April gardening, experts at Gazeboshop, have shared their five essential lawn care tips.

Avoid Mowing When Wet

While April is traditionally the ideal time for the first lawn cut of the year, it’s crucial to avoid mowing when the grass is wet.

Wet grass can result in an uneven cut and may cause your mower to struggle, leading to potential hazards such as overheating.

Wait until the grass is at least 95 percent dry before mowing, typically between two and five hours after a light shower.

Mow According to Temperature and Time

Mowing your lawn too early in the morning can expose it to disease and fungal infections.

The optimal time for mowing is mid-morning, between 8 AM and 10 AM.

Additionally, refrain from mowing if temperatures consistently drop below 10º C, as grass enters a dormant stage during colder periods.

Mow Weekly

Regular mowing promotes healthy growth and prevents stress on the grass.

Aim to mow your lawn once a week at the start of April, increasing to once every four days by the end of the month.

Be mindful not to cut the grass too short, as this can make it more susceptible to drought and weed growth.

Scarify Your Lawn

After months of harsh winter conditions, your lawn may benefit from scarification to remove thatch and moss buildup.

Use a flexible spring tine rake or a mechanical scarifier to improve airflow and rejuvenate the grass.

Repair Patchy Areas

Clear out weeds and dead grass from patchy areas and apply compost and grass seed evenly to the soil.

Lightly firm the soil and water the area with a hose to encourage germination.
