I’m a gardening expert and these are the top gardening mistakes you need to avoid

As summer approaches, Brits are preparing to roll up their sleeves and get green-fingered – but experts are warning that a few simple mistakes could stop your garden from flourishing this year. According to Hayden Salt, gardening expert at Jacksons Nurseries, small mistakes when it comes to watering, mowing, and plant care can have major consequences for your outdoor space, especially during the crucial growing season.

“Many gardeners, even experienced ones, underestimate how sensitive plants and lawns are to their environment,” Hayden explains. “A few wrong moves early on can really set your garden back.”

Overwatering vs. underwatering

One of the most common errors is incorrect watering. While it might seem obvious that plants need water, too much can be just as damaging as too little. “Overwatering suffocates the roots by depriving them of oxygen,” says Hayden.

“On the other hand, underwatering leads to stress and weak growth. It’s all about consistency – check the soil regularly and water deeply rather than frequently. The general rule of thumb is to water plants in the early morning or late evening when evaporation rates are lower,” he adds. “This will help to keep moisture levels stable.”

Cutting the lawn too short

Another common mistake is mowing the lawn too aggressively. While a neatly trimmed lawn may look appealing, cutting grass too short can cause more harm than good.

“Cutting your lawn too short weakens the grass and allows weeds to take over,” warns Hayden. “You should aim to cut no more than one-third of the grass height at a time. A slightly longer lawn will actually retain moisture better. I’d recommend sharpening mower blades regularly which will ensure a clean cut, promoting healthier regrowth. It also reduces the risk of disease.”

Ignoring early signs of trouble

Many gardeners also miss early signs of plant disease or pest infestation, which can quickly spread and devastate even the most well-tended garden.

“Look out for discolouration, unusual spots, wilting, or holes in leaves,” says Hayden. “The sooner you catch a problem, the easier it is to fix. Prevention is always better than cure, so regular inspections are a must. Keep a close eye on plants during warm and humid spells as this is the perfect breeding ground for fungal diseases.”

Don’t neglect the soil

Healthy plants start with healthy soil. Testing your soil’s pH and nutrient levels can help you choose the right fertilisers and amendments.

“Good soil nutrition is the foundation of a lush garden,” says Hayden. “Get that right, and everything else becomes easier.” Jacksons Nurseries is an award-winning, family-run plants nursery based in Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire.  Established for over 60 years, they specialise in supplying quality plants direct from the grower to your door.
