An iconic French classic has been branded the “weirdest car ever made” by historic vehicle experts. Specialists at YouTube channel @TFLclassics, profiled the plucky Citroen 2CV, describing the model as the “weirdest” but arguably the “coolest” classic built. The 2CV was produced by Citroen from 1848 to 1990 with almost four million models rolling off production lines.
However, the car has since become somewhat of a cultural icon, making it sought after by historic vehicle collectors. Just over 2,000 2CVs remain on UK roads today, with the car enjoying the support of a dedicated and loving fanbase.
TfLclassics said: “This is the Citroen 2CV and it is genuinely the weirdest car ever made. This car was designed to drive over French fields so it has genuinely the softest suspension in the world.
“It’s got a manual transmission, but you shift it using this umbrella handle that you push and pull.
“The windows don’t roll down, they don’t even slide, they actually flip upwards and then clip into place.
“The engine has just two cylinders and makes a whopping 28 horsepower. And there is a knob on the inside to adjust the headlights up and down if you’re carrying heavy stuff.
Motorists quickly took to the comments section to share their own memories of the 2CV with many having taken the machine for a spin.
YouTube viewer @VAspeed3 said: “I rode in one in England in 1985. It was extremely slow, but the ride was very soft, which is just fine when you are not (or cannot be) in a hurry.”
@ruzejp6823 remarked: “I had one 2CV from 1978 to 1995 and was never disappointed ,crossing France from North to South in all seasons , in winter through mountains under snow without special equipment thanks to its lightness and its narrow large tyres.”
Another road user added: “I’ve got one. It’s cheap and cheerful. The engineering is brilliant.”
