‘I’m a Brit living in Benidorm – avoid three things to prevent scams’ | Travel News | Travel

If you’re planning a trip to Benidorm this summer, one British expat issued a stark warning about common scams that could cost you dearly.

Harry, who shares content as @harrytokky on TikTok, frequently offers guidance about the Spanish coastal resort.

He’s previously cautioned about dodgy taxis, revealed where to find the cheapest pint, and even recommended Brits visit what he calls the “nicest McDonald’s in the whole entire world”.

However, this time he’s alerted fellow Brits about individuals who may appear friendly in Benidorm at first sight.

Yet beneath their cheerful facade, they could be concealing some alarming realities.

3. Potato man

Harry cautioned you’ll typically encounter these individuals during morning hours, describing them as “older men on the beachfront, doing these games”.

He explained the activity can “look like noughts and crosses,” but insisted it’s wise to “avoid them” as they’re “known scams in Benidorm”.

“Definitely avoid them. You are not going to win money, even though it looks like people are winning. It’s all part of their little con,” he fumed.

2. ‘Illegal’ cocktail drinks

Harry stated: “Now this is one I highly recommend avoiding. Those cocktail drinks are illegal, and you have no idea where they’re being made.

“It could be on the back of a truck for all you know, so I definitely highly recommend avoiding them.”

These beverages are deemed unlawful as they fall outside the remit of health and safety regulatory bodies.

The production and storage of such drinks typically fail to adhere to proper sanitation protocols, heightening the likelihood of bacterial contamination.

Purchasing from unauthorised sellers fuels criminal enterprises while undermining lawful establishments that comply with regulations to safeguard their patrons.

Local authorities in Benidorm consistently caution both holidaymakers and residents to steer clear of these illicit beverages and to exclusively buy drinks from established bars and eateries.

The dangers far exceed any possible cost benefits or curiosity factor, making it crucial for tourists to remain alert and put their wellbeing first.

1. The ladies of the dodgy night

Harry cautioned: “If you’re walking down Benidorm, anywhere in Benidorm, and you’re alone, generally alone, and these ladies walk up to you offering special services, avoid them.

“Now, most of the time they’re out to rob you, steal your phone, steal your jewellery, that sort of thing.”

He emphasised the importance of heightened awareness, particularly when consuming large quantities of alcohol before potentially making your way home unaccompanied.

You must always remain conscious of your environment.

Harry clarified he wasn’t attempting to “put you off” visiting Benidorm, acknowledging “these things happen all over the world,” but stressed that anyone planning a trip to Benidorm should be wary of these fraudulent schemes.
