'Icy Arctic airflow' set to sweep UK this weekend after snowy start

Get ready for more white-outs like this.

Just as the village of Lenham, Kent, is getting back to business after a blizzardy start to the week, an icy “Arctic airflow” is set to sweep into the UK this weekend.

And it could leave some parts shivering under “disruptive” blankets of snow into next week. The Met Office expects the big freeze from northern Europe to arrive from Sunday onwards.

And, after temperatures yesterday dropped to -5C in Hampshire and -4C in Suffolk, forecasters warned of a “resurgence in really cold weather”.

The current dry but colder than average conditions are due to high pressure over the UK.

Deputy chief meteorologist David Hayter said northern coastal areas are most likely to face “the initial snow risk”. But he added: “There’s an ongoing likelihood of disruptive snow through the middle to latter part of next week.

“What we’re keeping an eye on…is where milder air from the South West bumps into the cold air. It’s where these air masses meet that there’s a likelihood of some substantial snow.”

The UK Health Security Agency has issued a cold-health alert, warning of a “significant” impact on the health sector. It also said it is “vital” to check in on the over-65s and people with health conditions.

The RAC is urging drivers to pack warm clothes and a power bank for phones. Before Sunday, many parts will be “cloudier” with sub-zero overnight temperatures.
