‘I was sick of my cousin playing the victim so I told my family why her husband left her'

A disgruntled woman could not bear it any longer when her cousin had been continually playing the victim card after her husband left her. She expressed that her cousin “Lilly” continually complained about how difficult it was to be a single mother – without sharing the full story.

However, at a family get together for Christmas, she ‘snapped’, and spilled the beans on what had actually happened. Instead of taking her side for being honest, her mother said she should have been more understanding.

The anonymous user, who posted her plight on Reddit, wanted to know if she was in the wrong.

She claims that her cousin has ‘no one else to blame but her’, and has been ‘bitter’ after the whole situation unfolded.

She wrote: “My cousin ‘Lilly’ has been dating ‘Ben’ since they were teenagers, so for about ten years. They really loved each other.

“Ben has a great job but he is away a lot, for three to four months at a time. For almost two years he also had to take extra jobs, which meant he was staying away more, so that he could save money for their wedding and help his siblings pay their university tuition fees.”

She then shared that her cousin Lilly had lost her job during Covid, which meant that she had to move back to his tiny apartment. Lilly decided to go back into education, which was also funded by Ben taking extra jobs.

Lilly told her cousin earlier this year that she had fallen pregnant, but after she was congratulated, she burst into tears. She was ten weeks pregnant, but Ben had been away for work for over three months. It wasn’t his child.

“I was in shock and couldn’t really say anything,” shared the cousin. “The next morning we went for a walk. She didn’t want to share the details with me, but I told her that we would help her, and I advised her to come clean with Ben.”

When the baby was born last month, Lilly’s mum shared that she had broken down in the delivery room as soon as she saw the baby, which was very obviously not Ben’s. She had “begged” him not to leave, and “was a mess”.

“We had a family get together this weekend, since most people won’t be available around Christmas. Everyone avoided the Lilly subject until one of the little ones asked where Ben was.

“Lilly said he didn’t want her or the baby anymore. She rambled about how life as a single mother was tough, and he was a selfish man. She kept playing the victim and I snapped.

“I said she should have seen this coming. Things escalated. I told her she could at least have tried to salvage the friendship if she was honest with him and told him that the baby wasn’t his.

“I also said that he had warned her the last time that she cheated, he said he wouldn’t forgive her. It was a yelling match, and her mum was furious because she didn’t know about a lot that had happened, and was under the impression that it had been a one time mistake.”

The post was met with heaps of support after the user questioned whether she had been too harsh. One commenter said that Lilly had “deserved it”, as “she cheated on him, he forgave her and still supported her, but she continued cheating on him”.

The commenter then expressed the other issues that surround infidelity: “Even worse, she had unprotected sex with another guy,” and highlighted the risk of sexually transmitted diseases that she could have passed on to Ben.

Other commenters have shared their concerns for the baby, and the start that they have been given in life. One user questioned why she had the baby, and “went through” with the pregnancy.
